I have read a few articles on automatic programming (AP). A lot of good articles can be found at the American Association for AI. I think it comes down to a problem of scale; many software engineering problems are complex not because of theoretical dif culties or unique concepts, just size. These problems should be approachable with faster and more ef cient (smarter) AP. I think it will require a leap of some kind, if it is possible at all, to move to a system that can generate new and novel programs that are not applications of known principles and concepts. Fourth-generation programming languages are also a step in this direction. These have been around for a while and usually focus on a speci c domain, but are a step in the direction of taking speci cation to program with less work. Personally, I think it will not be that long before you will be able to go from speci cation to application for most common domains without coding. You can get very close with today s tools and component libraries. Unique or original problems will still require programmers, but if these solutions prove useful they will most likely make it into the common domains. For example, you can create a very complex and unique Web application with many of the modern content management systems with no coding at all. The most you would have to do is choose components and con guration options (the architecture). My site uses Drupal and could have been done without any coding.
